New Professional 2012

Our new professional for 2012 is Shaun De Kock. Shaun is from East London in South Africa and plays for Border. He is a left hand batter and slow left arm orthodox bowler.

Shaun's stats from Cricinfo

Sponsorship 2012

The Club is looking for a willing volunteer to take on Sponsorship work for the coming season. The primary task will be to increase the number of ball and match sponsors for 1st XI games and build upon existing relationships with local companies and establish new contacts.

Anyone interested in supporting the club in this important role should contact Graham Ainslie, Club Chairman, on 07766656384.

Scorers Required 2012

As the new season approaches our annual search for Scorers begins. This year we need two, one for the Seconds and one for the Thirds. Anyone interested email Gary Jackson or call him on 07745450176

ECB National Knockout

We have been drawn at home to Fulwood and Broughton in this year's competition. The game will take place on Sunday 29th April.

Our first game of the season will be a trip to Southport on Sunday 8th April to get back into the groove - hopefully we will have a professional by then!!

A Message From The Chairman

All the best to you and the family for 2012.

As 2011 draws to a close and the curtain comes down on our Centenary Year, it is timely to thank all those members, players, supporters and sponsors that have contributed to this year's successes both on and off the field of play.

Our goal is now to keep the momentum flowing and moving the club forward. To do this we need the support of more volunteers in keeping our club in good health.

I hope to list a comprehensive list of jobs/tasks in due course, which will be published on the club website. This will give all members an indication of the roles that are undertaken behind the scenes and hopefully we can get more people on board. We managed to achieve this during the Centenary Year and the Committee and myself feel this needs to be built upon.

Finally, can I take the opportunity to wish everyone a Prosperous and Healthy 2012. Let's also hope the weather is on our side and that silverware returns to the home of cricket.

Best Wishes

Graham Ainslie
Chairman

Towers Shine on Centenary Golf Day – Clarkey and the Bandits Win by a Distance

This years champions, duly written into club history, were a ringer, a committee member, a man with no clubs and a rabbit. Clarkey ripped up the course on his first outing (carding 80 gross), Benny demonstrated his natural sporting ability, whilst Golfo_69 nudged and nurdled points when required. Thankfully it was a still and warm day, so the featherweight Chairman of Cricket could relax in the knowledge he would not be blown away at the top of the course. Darius managed to stay away from Treasurer Geoff this year, who was pleased to complete a nice round alongside Vice President Pete Jennings without being buzzed from adjacent tee-beds.

The day opened with a team draw. We had 28 players of varying ability plus Horsy. In light of the byzantine points system and handicapping, a ‘golfer’ was assigned to lead each team, with names pulled out of a hat in front of an expectant group. Last years winner and the laughing assassin Bill Ainslie seemed very chipper and for some reason, DGC member and big boomer Niall was not considered worthy of team captaincy. After a few pints and much mucking around in front of a bemused group of local dodderers, play got underway at 11.58 as a bullish Thommo slapped a wonderful cover drive onto the 18th fairway. Lancashire League winner and 9 handicapper Jon Finch was next up with the Flying Omelette (Horsfield) and Reece – welcome to the Darwen Experience Finchy; he couldn’t get into the bar quick enough when his round finished some seven and half hours later.

As befits a competition of mixed abilities, there were awards to be won for the absurd and outlandish. Club Captain and left-handed batter Johnnyboy turned up with some right handed clubs - how does that work then? After plenty of bravado on the practice field his first shot didn’t even reach the ladies tee. In fact, I understand that he played a leg glance into the Pro shop (behind him) and was rightly awarded the Worst Drive of the day.

Benny turned up without any clubs and ended up walking round with his soap bag, which must have performed really well considering he chalked up 25 points. An easy decision for the Worst Clubs award.

Callum Burke cut an imposing figure on the course and became a firm friend of the greenkeeper, literally ripping up the fairways with an overly-steep swing and arc. His neatest trick was to nudge the ball forward 5 yards and land an impeccably carved sod of turf on top. That takes some special talent and was rightly rewarded with the Worst Shot of the Day award.

Clarkey was the only player to get his tee shot over the trees on the 14th, so was an easy pick for the nearest pin (40 yards away) and beefcake Greg Lawro smacked the longest drive after chewing on a iron bar and showing everyone his new tattoo – a 12 inch Cherry Tree badge on his chest. Angry Gregor. Playing in the Ribblesdale League requires raw aggression to survive and he has certainly added some steel during his sabbatical. He abstained from the quite lovely plate meat pie afterwards, preferring instead a lettuce leaf washed down with a creatine shake.

The strong lager and high altitude up at the golf club did cause some post-game difficulties for Wadey who was inebriated and talking Italian before the last team had finished. Unconfirmed reports are that he was sick down the front of his newly-acquired sleeveless jumper, but no-one would have noticed.

Big thanks go to Chris Davies Promotions for organising a great day. Everyone enjoyed the game (except Zac), the Golf Club earnt a few bob behind the bar and we raised a good sum for the Cricket Club. A win:win:win scenario and nice sporting end to the season.

END OF SEASON DO SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER 2011

The end of season get together is on Saturday after the last Northern Premier League round of fixtures. Everyone is welcome, the fun commences from 1930 and includes music, fancy dress (music theme) and free spud pie.

ALEX MAKES LANCASHIRE DEBUT

At the age of 16 Alex Davies made his debut for the Lancashire First XI in the CB40 match against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay. He performed superbly behind the stumps in a heavy defeat to the Welshmen. Then he used his exprerience to 'red-ink' and finish on 6 not out batting at number 9. Who picks the batting order? John?

There was a heavy contingent of Darwen support at the game to watch Alan in his first of hopefully many games for the county. It was a proud moment for the club and for the Davies family. However, Mandy is still being treated at a local clinic for a nervous related disorder!!

Well done Alex!!

DCC ADVENTURES INCORPORATED – BEN NEVIS 2011

The DCC Extreme Sport Members decided to take on Ben Nevis this year following a successful coasteering venture last year. The magnificent 6 of Lowe, Cook, Thompson, Rafferty, Burke and Burke began the long trip up to Fort William and the 6 hour journey saw a vast range of conversations and opinions, as well as a view of the lovely Glasgow skyline which can only be matched by a summers evening on the Amalfi coast quaffing a glass of Pinot Grigio. We had a brief stop at the Inn at Inverbeg, on the shores of Loch Lomond, a quaint Fish and Whiskey Bar. It promised a lot but we were let down by wafer thin beef and ham. At the end of the Loch there had been a murder but Taggart and Co were quick on hand to solve.

We arrived at our Ben Nevis Youth Hostel and Tomo’s worst fears were realised – no towels, spa facilities, turn down service or plugs in the room. We received our instructions on arrival on how to make our bed and this dampened the mood of the Company Director more who asked the Australian travelling receptionist if he would like Tomo to paint the Fascia boards. A beverage was required and we entered into a pub full of copper kettles playing Christmas tunes – this was a bizarre introduction to Scottish Highland life. Like any meeting of Darwen CC members it was an obvious opportunity to eyebrow and further wind up the 5* hotelier Tomo. We now had to prepare correctly for the ascent of Britain’s biggest Mountain – we decided on 10 pints and a curry. Cooky recommended this after hearing this was the pre climb meal of Sir Edmund Hillary, excellent curry was the verdict but some rather strange pubs visited. We awoke to low level cloud and that was just in the room – the smell in the room is something North Korea are looking to create.

The ascent began, an initial hard and steep climb. The Tennetts Sweat began and Tomo deserted the rest to climb solo ignoring all Mountain rules and etiquette. It was at this point Martin and Niall Burke realised a pint and poppadom too many were had – the dream was over but they will bounce back. Lobo, Wayno, Cooky and Tomo carried on with the incentive of seeing Cooky’s coat at the top. The ascent was long, dragged and lacked any other points of note. Apart from at 1008 metres where the dream was realised – the temperature and weather meant Cooky got his coat out. This garment is priceless and Cooky told us it is endorsed by Bear Grylls. It is basically green and very long – it would even drown former DCC greats Beezer and Hacking. We reached the summit and celebrated with a jam sandwich, handshake and a photo of Cooky’s coat. Our descent was quick and was only interrupted by Wayno leaving a gift 400m above sea level, a Lamb Bhuna smoothie or something of that ilk – enjoy sheep!! A lovely journey home – highighlighted when the Company Director’s car was overtook and bullied by a Chevrolet 1.1 registration LL11 CME. A good tour, full of stories and good banter. Roll on next year – the options are ghyll scrambling or sea kayaking with a spot of camping to mix it up. Tour requisites are standard – an opportunity to wind Tomo up, an opportunity to see Cooky’s coat, beer, banter and adrenaline. Come join us.

DARWEN CRICKET CLUB BOWLS NIGHT 2011

New 2011 DCC Bowls Champion is Derek "the Dirk" Hamer

On a wet n wild night the hardcore braved it and the format did not play into the reigning champions hands Mr Mark Emery. The skill level and concentration was high despite Horsey constantly complaining about bowlers lengths. Derek came out successful with a last match victory over the Horse and a David Pleat style celebration followed. Well Done Derek!! Thanks to everyone who attended and raised funds for Cancer Research. Thanks to Olive Lane Bowls club, their committee Ken Lowe and Chris Lowe Productions for organising it.

Denise and Linda

Linda Ainslie and Denise Douglas were inspired to organise this event after the loss of both Linda’s Mum Joan in January and Denise’s Mother-In-Law Joyce in February, this year. Cancer has also touched many other members and families at Darwen Cricket Club in recent times.

As this is the club’s Centenary year what a better opportunity to raise monies for such a worthy cause.

Eighty Five Ladies attended the event which raised £775.00 for Cancer Research. This will be handed over to the charity in the next couple of weeks.

A huge THANK YOU to all those that supported the event, by ways of selling tickets and donating raffle prizes.

Chris Davies became the most successful bowler in Second Team history yesterday as he took 3 wickets against Kendal at Birch Hall.

A magnificent achievement to overtake the 378 wickets taken by Darwen legend Dave Bonner. Well done CD!

BILL ISHERWOOD

Bill Isherwood, our club president and a great supporter of the club over many years, sadly passed away on Sunday 3rd April 2011.

Bill was a true gentlemen in every sense of the word, a man who always had time to speak to everyone.

Bill's funeral mass will take place on Tuesday 12th April at 1230 at St.Cuthberts, Darwen

Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time.

A tribute from Dave Bonner

When I joined Darwen cricket club way back in 1960 Bill Isherwood was involved at the club as secretary.

Over the many years associated with the club Bill has carried out the functions of not only the secretary but also Chairman, life member and club president which was a fine reward for a man who although never played cricket for the club had been a tremendous worker and supporter for the club.

In over his 50 years plus service , I do not think I have heard anyone who had a wrong word to say about him. When the club needed to raise much needed revenue and a 500 club was raised. Bill volunteered to carry this out himself and was personally responsible for obtaining well over 100 members through his hard work and endeavour.

Bill was a true gentleman, highly respected and a man that many people looked up to and admired, he always had a word for everyone, one of the strongest handshakes and the writer of many letters of congratulations to many young cricketers.

He will be sadly missed.

David Bonner

NIALLERS - A BURKE IN BRISBANE

Darwen first team all-rounder Niall Burke is currently out in 'sunny' Australia revelling in the Ashes victory. He is part of a cricket training camp for 3 months and playing for a local team. I am sure when Niall embarked on his trip, cleaning up the mess made by the floods and sheltering from a cyclone were not high up on the things he thought he may doing. However, after years playing at Birch Hall and living in Darren, he could not see what all the fuss was about. Just a normal night near Jack Keys Lodge!

LEE THOMPSON FIFTH TEAM ARE CHAMPIONS

Sunday XI Bring home the Bacon

Crowning a glorious season at Birch Hall, the Sunday XI have been confirmed champions of the Palace Shield Sunday Division 2. The competition went down to the wire, but the Towers finally edged out St Annes by a single point and will be promoted to the first division for next season. For the skipper, a 17-year bogey has been finally broken as the nightmare of a disastrous Chorley League Under 17s cup final was expunged from memory. Back in 1993, the portly Thompson had taken his young charges to the brink of glory, quite literally as he was the only driver in the team. However at the death, the team packed their bags for Torremolinos and the title chance went with them. To rub salt into the wounds a shaggy-haired Buffet took the helm two seasons later, somehow won the championship and never let his big brother forget it.

So, whilst the season was short, we still packed in some magical cricket, kept Birch Hall open for business on Sundays and learnt a lot about the Palace Shield along the way. The league is very well run and I am sure our thirds and fourths will enjoy playing on better grounds at a competitive level when they enter next season. Thanks go to all who helped get the team started and kept it furnished with players, facilities and teas through the season. Our continued objective is to give Sunday-only players, out-of-form Saturday players and emerging youngsters the chance to play competitive cricket on good grounds. Sundays are Fundays, Up the Towers!

Best regards

Tommo

PROUD TO BE A DARRENER

Another decade same old story, more silverware in the Birch Hall cabinet.

The only difference is that this time it's the new generation that take the headlines. John Cordy and his 'Young Guns' produced a first class all-round performance to lift the Readers Cup, on a glorious afternoon on the Morecambe coastline. As Chairman I feel the proudest person in Darwen, to have witnessed a memorable game of cricket that had supporters from each club, embroiled in the August sunshine. Neil Cordingley was rightly named man of the match, but all our players contributed to the victory. Our ground fielding was spectacular as catches were taken, stumpings were crucial and a match winning run out from Zimmy sent the Morecambe professional back to the pavilion with 'game over'. This group of players can bring more success to our club over the coming years, as there emergence as a force has been warmly welcomed. My thanks also to the huge amount of supporters that made the journey. I'm sure the players welcomed playing in front of a partisan ground. I suspect there would have been one or two sore heads on Monday morning.

My message finally is back to the players, you have now set the standard for years to come, keep raising the bar and we will enjoy many more occasions like last Sunday.

Simply magnificent!!

A very proud Chairman

ZIMMY'S A DARRENER AGAIN

Run-machine professional Zimmy has agreed terms to be Darwen's paid man for the 2011 season.
